Well, almost ended...for a couple of hundred years the surface was so polluted humans had to leave on these island things in the air.

Fortunately, most of the animals had been put on zoo planets, so once things got back to normal we we're able to repopulate most of them. The world looks pretty much the same in the 51st century as it does now.
